Description
Benefits
Needless to say, that good environmental conditions are essential to the bird's welfare and
to the business success of the coops. controlling the quality of the water in the coops is of
top priority.
pH is a measurement of how acidic/basic water is, from 0 – 14, with 7 being neutral. pH of
less than 7 indicate acidity, whereas a pH that is greater than 7 indicates a base.
In most cases, water is basic, and has a high level of alkalinity. Various studies indicate many
benefits to reducing the pH level in water. Water acidification (adding weak organic or
mineral acids) to lower the pH level is becoming more and more common in the poultry
industry, to significantly encourage food consumption, as a substitute for antibiotic growth
catalysts, the use of which in the industry is completely prohibited in Europe and many
western countries.
Studies show that the birds prefer water with a pH level between 6.4 and 6.8. They will drink
more water if the pH is within this range. Increased water consumption will also significantly
encourage food consumption.
Another purpose in acidifying the water is to improve the health and function of the birds’
digestive systems, and thus to promote the absorption of digestive products (nutrients) into
their bodies.
